As Chris's concerns deepened about his ability to care for his beloved wife Suzie, they discovered a lifeline in the Staying at Home program.
This free carer wellbeing and respite program, specifically designed for people living with dementia and their carers, provided not only practical advice but also emotional support and breakthrough moments, emerging as a beacon of hope for the couple.
Participating in the two-day residential program, Chris and Suzie explored tailored support and engaged in activities designed to uncover Suzie's sources of joy. A pivotal breakthrough occurred when Suzie connected with the robotic companion dog, "Sammy," fostering a sense of ease and even sparking conversations in French.
In the past year, the program supported 111 couples, delivering 25 sessions nationwide. Additionally, with 12 external providers now delivering the service supported by resources on our Staying at Home Provider Hub, the program's reach is expanding.
The
Staying at Home program is empowering carers to navigate the experiences and challenges of supporting their loved ones living with dementia, playing a pivotal role in enabling couples to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their homes for an extended period.
