How to create a Behaviour Support Plan for residents in your care

#News #Healthcare Professional

Behaviour is influenced by many things and for someone living with dementia, behaviour may be the only way they have to communicate or respond to what is happening.

Examine all potential causes

The impact of environment, social relationships and routines, and their physical, mental and emotional health all influence how a person responds.

We have practical tools on our website that can help you understand these contributing factors, such as how to identify pain, a delirium screen, and also how to document lifestyle and social histories and chart behaviour frequency. You can access these resources here.

But if these interventions don’t work and restrictive practice is necessary then a Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) is critical, not only to meet regulatory requirements but to help you understand the care needs of the person with dementia. The BSP notes what's been tried, its effects, and outcomes. Tools like a behaviour assessment form let you track how interventions or strategies work, creating a fuller picture over time.

The goal is to work towards non-pharmacological interventions replacing the restrictive practice, and the BSP will be your planning tool as well as providing clear evidence of why it is necessary.

A comprehensive guide on behaviour change and dementia

The BPSD Textbook is a valuable educational tool for those seeking insights into Behaviours and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). Edited by Associate Professor Colm Cunningham, Associate Professor Stephen Macfarlane, and Dr Madeleine Healy, this resource blends research-based scholarship and practical evidence.

The textbook offers a unique combination of theory and practice, drawing from diverse experts and based on HammondCare's experience in dementia care. It covers types of dementia, potential causes of behaviour change, holistic assessment, medical considerations, tailored interventions, and more.

Real-life case studies provide tangible examples, while summaries and exercises enhance understanding and application. The BPSD Textbook is a valuable resource for healthcare professionals aiming to enhance their expertise in understating and supporting a person experiencing BPSD.

If you need more support, you can access the Behaviour Support Plan: Essential Guide here and additional resources about restrictive practices from the Aged Care Quality and Safety and Commission here.
