Helping Your Family Member with Dementia Move into Residential Aged Care

Written by Dementia Support Australia | Jan 27, 2022 3:48:37 AM

This helpsheet provides ideas to help your First Nations family member feel more at home in aged care and keep connection with family, community and country.

Adjusting to living in aged care can be especially difficult for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person who is living with dementia and may not understand why they cannot stay at home or be on Country.

This resource was created in consultation with the DSA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander expert review panel and champions group, including:

  • Anthony Lew-Fatt (Australian Rural and Remote Community Services - ARRCS)
  • A/Prof Dina LoGuidice and Harry Douglas (The University of Melbourne)
  • Prof. Leon Flicker (The University of Western Australia)
  • Lianne Gilchrist and Lesley Marley (The University of Western Australia)
  • Dr. Sarah Russell and Rachel Quigley (James Cook University)
