The First Nations Language Guidelines are a valuable resource providing advice on how to use respectful and culturally appropriate language when communicating with, and about, First Nations peoples.
To provide the best possible care it is important to understand and recognise the diversity in the experiences, knowledge and views of First Nations peoples. Developed in consultation with respected experts and First Nations peoples, this Guide highlights key cultural practices and lists important general principles to support building a stronger relationship with First Nations peoples and their families.
The First Nations Language Guidelines also provides language choices when communicating with and about First Nations peoples, including a list of terms that should be avoided, the reason why they shouldn't be used and recommended alternatives.
