The festive season is a time for celebration but can add additional stress. So here are some top tips to help you, families, care teams and the person living with dementia enjoy the holidays.
The festive season is fast approaching and for many of us this will be the first year we’ve been able to come together in some time. It is the time of year to be with family and friends, to share stories and delicious food, and give thanks. And for many of us this season has religious significance.
Although this is a time for celebration, we know it can add additional stress for carers of a person living with dementia. So here are some top tips to help you, families, care teams and the person living with dementia:
- Encourage the sharing of holiday memories and traditions by sharing stories, saying grace, and looking at photos.
- Involve the person with dementia in the planning – this is a great reminiscence activity and can focus on food, decorations, and spirituality.
- When sitting down, seat the person with dementia where they can see as much as possible and next to the best person to provide assistance if needed.
- Try to reduce noise levels, have one conversation at a time, maybe don’t have the festive music on if people are talking.
- If family are not able to visit make sure to schedule a video call or chat if possible, to connect people.
- The festive season can bring up a lot of memories for the person living with dementia. Involve them in activities that you know they will enjoy and can do easily.
- And finally, take the time to enjoy the season with each other and reach out
