Getting the conversation started

Written by Dementia Support Australia | Sep 20, 2024 6:22:37 AM

Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) is a rare dementia, but for people diagnosed in their 40s and 50s, FTD is more common than Alzheimer’s disease.

FTD is associated with complex and often severe behaviours, making specialised support for carers essential. That’s why we’re proud to introduce Carer Conversations—a nationwide network of support groups tailored specifically for carers of people living with FTD.

Unlike Alzheimer’s, FTD primarily affects the frontal lobe—the area of the brain responsible for personality, emotional expression, and language. The early age of onset and symptoms often leads to FTD being misdiagnosed as depression or even more serious mental health conditions such as schizophrenia.

Adding to the challenge of misdiagnosis, limited availability of appropriate care accommodation means family members are frequently the primary carers, providing care at home.

Recognising these challenges, we’ve has partnered with the Australian Frontotemporal Dementia Association (AFTDA) to launch Carer Conversations.

These free monthly sessions, available both face-to-face and online, provide a safe and supportive environment that empowers carers to discuss what is happening for them and gain valuable insights into behaviour support.

Each group is facilitated by skilled neuropsychologists and DSA consultants, offering personalised advice and strategies for addressing the unique changes associated with FTD.

We encourage carers to register their interest now. To learn more or to sign up, contact us at 1800 699 799, visit dementia.com.au.
